Apple unveiled its latest iPad on
Tuesday: A $329, 9.7-inch model that will only cost educators $299.
Apple believes that the new tablet, introduced during an
education-focused event at Chicago’s Lane Tech College Prep High School,
will be able to fend off Google’s Chromebooks, which have gained
significant ground in the classroom.
The marquee feature of the new iPad is support for Apple Pencil,
the company’s stylus previously reserved for the iPad Pro. With the $99
Pencil, users can input text, write notes, or draw directly on the
iPad’s screen. The new tablet doesn't include a connector to support
Apple's Smart Keyboard, however.
The new iPad features the follow specifications:
Display: 9.7-inch, 2048‑by‑1536, 264ppi
Processor: A10 Fusion
Rear camera: 8MP HD video camera
Front camera: 1.2MP
Battery life: 10 hours (estimated)
Storage: 32GB, 128GB

To usher in the new Pencil support, Apple is also releasing new
versions of its iWork apps that bring tools to both consumers and
teachers. Among the additions is a version of iBooks Author built into
Pages so you can create digital books like on the Mac. Apple will also
be adding smart annotation in a future update so you can make up Pages
files without ruining your work.
There are also new versions of GarageBand and Clips with animal sounds and filters geared toward kids.

naturally there was a flurry of education-based announcements. In
addition to getting a free upgrade to 200GB of iCloud storage for every
student, schools who sign up for Apple’s iPad curriculum will also get
access to the new Classroom app on the Mac, which replicates the
management app already on the iPad. Teachers will now be able to control
which apps are being used by their students and easily share documents
from their Macs to iPads.
Also new is a Schoolwork app, which lets
teachers track hand-outs and assignments, and keep tabs on each
student’s progress, as well as Swift-based coding tools. There's also an
Apple Teacher online training program with lesson plans devoted to incorporating the iPad's suite of apps into the classroom.
Last year, Apple introduced a 9.7-inch iPad for $329, and sales for the iPad grew for the first time in three years. Apple's new iPad is available for purchase today at Apple.com.
Disney Research, MIT Media Lab, and Carnegie Mellon University have unveiled a new conceptual haptic “force jacket” that simulates physical experiences to people wearing the device. The force jacket is lined with airbags controlled by a computer that inflates and deflates the bags. Disney envisions the jacket will be used with VR headsets for more immersive experiences, given its ability to simulate hugs, being hit or punched, and peculiarly, the sensation of a snake slithering across your body. The jacket is made up of airbags with sensors attached that direct force and vibrations to specific locations on your body. The software-controlled jacket weighs about five pounds and has a valve system that inflates and deflates 26 air compartments. There was some bad news for owners of the latest iPhone models on Monday. Batteries in the iPhone 8 and X may have shorter life spans than those in prior models, according to an article in ZDNet. The battery in contributor Adrian Kingsley-Hughes' iPhone 8 Plus was racking up recharge cycles at an alarming rate, he wrote. A recharge cycle occurs when a phone is charged from zero power to 100 percent. Typically, phone batteries begin losing their effectiveness after 500 recharges. Up to that point, they can hold up to 80 percent of their charge. After that, it's usually downhill for the battery. After only four months, Kingsley-Hughes discovered that his new iPhone had hit 91 recharge cycles, a much faster rate than he'd seen in his previous iPhones. Image: United States Patent and Trademark Office Apple has applied to patent a VR system for autonomous cars that would use interior screens and VR headsets to alter the interior of the vehicle, as reported by VentureBeat . The patent, applied for in September 2017 and published last week, is framed as a way to “address problems with vehicles in motion that may result in motion sickness for passengers” by replacing views of the real world with virtual environments. On top of that, the patent proposes at least one VR controller that generates virtual content for projection and a mechanism for projecting onto windows of the vehicle.
